Born in Belfast in 1948, Gibson worked with the Belfast Telegraph as a graphic designer, before deciding to become a professional artist at the age of twenty-six. His first solo exhibition was held at the Nelson Bell Gallery in 1968 and he has gone on to become a very successful visual artist, with his own unique style.
His paintings are produced 'en plein air' which contributes to their natural and realistic atmosphere. He has exhibited widely, both in Ireland and abroad..
